Lower American River
Nestled in Sacramento
Sacramento, CA
In late spring and early summer, the Lower American River comes alive with shad runs—perfect for beginners and intermediate anglers learning how to read water and swing flies. By mid-summer, it’s prime time for striped bass, and as fall rolls in, steelhead become the main target. Winter brings a mix of steelhead and bass depending on flows and clarity.
This dynamic urban tailwater—flowing from Nimbus Dam to the confluence with the Sacramento River—offers seasonal variety and year-round potential. It's also the best place to practice two-handed (Spey) casting if you're interested in swing techniques.
Kum Sayo
Kum Sayo is the Nisenan name for the "American River". Kum Sayo directly translates into Roundhouse River. The Nisenan people have, and still do, share this land with their relatives - the Maidu, Miwok and Me-Wuk, the Patwin, Wintun and Wintu peoples.
