kum sayo

Kum Sayo is the Nisenan name for the "American River".
Kum Sayo directly translates into Roundhouse River.
The Nisenan people have, and still do, share this land with their relatives - the Maidu, Miwok and Me-Wuk, the Patwin, Wintun and Wintu peoples.

Our guided fly fishing trips extend along this lower section of the American River which is commonly referred to as the Lower American River.

Whether you want to get into the mayhem of shad fishing, chase bad-to-the-bone striped bass with heavy sinking lines, or battle some California Steelhead, we got you covered for a trip that includes education, relaxation, and most of all...FUN!

Folsom Lake

The mighty Kum Sayo is interrupted by several dams, notably Folsom Dam, completed in 1955. This created Folsom Lake for flood control, hydropower, and water storage, submerging the traditional lands of the Nisenan and Miwok peoples. The shift from a flowing river to a stillwater reservoir displaced communities like Negro Bar, where African American miners sought their fortunes during the Gold Rush. This disruption erased social connections and histories, fundamentally altering the region's natural landscape.
