The mighty Kum Sayo—now known as the American River—was reshaped in 1955 when Folsom Dam was built. The dam, a 340-foot concrete wall flanked by earth dikes and wing dams, created Folsom Lake with over 10,000 surface acres of water and 75 miles of shoreline. Fed by both the North and South Forks of the American, the lake stretches 15 miles in one direction and 10½ in the other, changing with the seasons as water levels rise and fall.

Just downstream sits Nimbus Dam and Powerplant, which re-regulates Folsom’s fluctuating flows and forms Lake Natoma. Together, these projects became part of California’s massive Central Valley Project, delivering water, hydropower, and flood protection to communities across the state.

The dams brought flood protection, hydropower, and water supply, but they also submerged Nisenan and Miwok homelands and displaced historic communities like Negro Bar, where African American miners sought opportunity during the Gold Rush. While the river’s course has been interrupted, it still carries the stories, ecosystems, and fish that connect past to present.

Today, Folsom Lake has become a surprising fly fishing destination. On our guided trips, we target spotted and largemouth bass with proven tactics like float-n-fly rigs, streamer presentations, and thrilling topwater strikes.

Whether you’re brand-new to fly fishing or chasing your next trophy, we’ll help you sharpen your skills and unlock the potential of this water. From chasing bass in the stillwaters of Folsom Lake to following the river downstream into the American’s legendary runs, you’ll experience the power of a system that’s still very much alive.

  • The boat can comfortably accommodate up to 2 anglers plus your guide — perfect for a personalized, intimate fishing experience.

  • All participants need a valid California Fishing License. Licenses can be easily purchased online in advance.

  • To book, we require a 50% deposit to hold your date. The balance is due 48 hours before your trip. We accept credit cards, debit cards, and online payments.

  • Spotted Bass: Spring through early fall (April–October)

  • Of course! A guided trip makes a wonderful gift. You can purchase a gift certificate directly from me and book a date later that works for them.

  • We provide high-end fly rods, reels, lines, and flies tailored to each trip, but you’re always welcome to bring your own gear if you prefer.
